Statement of Support for Jeffco Public Schools and LGBTQ+ Inclusive Student Policies

We, the undersigned advocacy organizations, community leaders, and individuals stand together in support of Jeffco Public Schools’ commitment to policies that protect the dignity, safety, and right to belong of LGBTQ+ students, including transgender and nonbinary students.

At a time when public education and the rights of LGBTQ+ people are increasingly being drawn into national political conflicts, Jeffco Public Schools has demonstrated principled leadership. The U.S. Department of Education’s threatened enforcement action—and the potential loss of over $50 million in federal funding—places the district, its educators, and its students in an extraordinarily difficult position. We support the district’s decision to defend its inclusive policies, reject unsupported allegations concerning its compliance with Title IX, uphold Colorado’s strong protections against discrimination, and file a lawsuit seeking court guidance.

All students deserve to attend school knowing that they are valued, protected, and belong in their community. By standing against efforts that would undermine those protections, Jeffco Public Schools is defending not only transgender and nonbinary students, but the fundamental principle that public schools must be safe and welcoming places for every child, sending the message: You belong here, you are valued, and we will protect you.

The implications of this dispute extend beyond Jefferson County. Any legal or administrative action taken against Jeffco Public Schools could affect school districts and students throughout Colorado and the Nation. The outcome could therefore shape whether local communities are able to make decisions based on the needs and safety of all the children and families they serve.

We urge the public and our elected representatives to unite in support of the Jeffco Board of Education and Jefferson County Schools to support the district’s inclusive policies and its defense of all students’ rights to a safe and welcoming learning environment. A strong and unified position will demonstrate that threats to federal funding will not be used to force the district to abandon its legal responsibilities or its commitment to student safety and belonging.

Jeffco Public Schools should not have to face this fight alone. The organizations and individuals signing this statement are prepared to do more than offer words of support. We are ready to publicly support Jeffco Public Schools and the Board of Education, advocate on behalf of the district and its students, and support the district as it confronts the legal, administrative, and political challenges ahead.

Every student and family deserves to know that they belong here and their community is behind them.
