Social Emotional Learning and Mental Health In Jeffco Schools
March 4 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Join Engage Jeffco as we host our second presentation in our educational series. Laura Wheeler, SEL Implementation Specialist, will lead us through an in-depth exploration of social emotional learning (SEL) and how it supports student well-being and academic success.
What we’ll cover:
- What is SEL: We’ll demystify Social Emotional Learning (SEL)—moving beyond the buzzwords to define the core competencies that help students manage emotions and set goals.
- SEL Specialist Role: Discover exactly how SEL Specialists (SELS) support classrooms. Which schools in Jeffco currently have dedicated SEL staff, and what are the specific numbers across the district?
- Beyond the Lesson Plan: SELS do more than teach resilience. We’ll discuss the “hidden” roles they fill, from crisis intervention to teacher coaching and building positive school culture and climate.
- Mental Health Ecosystem: A school is a village. We will map out the broader support network, understanding the distinct roles of:
- School Counselors
- Social Workers
- School Psychologists
- Community Mental Health Partners (Hazel, JCMH, etc.)
- Budget Cuts: We’ll have a conversation about the Jeffco budget cuts and how those cuts are impacting social-emotional learning and mental health supports in schools.
Who: This presentation is geared towards parents and caregivers who are trying to better understand social-emotional learning and how it supports their students. But teachers, staff, and community members looking to learn more are welcome as well!
